Description: The first foray. This one had the most straightforward rules: 1 hour for everything (in later parties we would add a 30 minute vocal session after the initial hour), and it shows.
It was interesting to see how ambitious people were with their hour, and how quickly it got eaten up. The original plan was to have everything mic'd and wired up so all people would have to do is press record and go. What I didn't count on was the variability of the instrumental make-up of all these various 'bands' so it quickly dawned on me that I'd be the 'recording engineer' - moving mics and 'driving' protools all day. Another interesting thing to observe was the different direction everyone came at the write-a-song-in-an-hour problem, and all the complications that could arise. The first band used a sampler to record a loop for their intro, which ate up a huge chunk of time. The second band wrote their song quickly, rehearsed it a few times and had extra time for vocals. The third band had trouble agreeing on a musical direction, so only had time for a single pass at the lyrics (Cribbed from a nearby record sleeve). It's also important to note that since everyone was encouraged to show up on time to increase the pool for randomization, there were people sitting around upstairs, consuming prodigious amounts of alcohol. Thus, when a musician was drawn became a factor. -- Adam |
